Domaine Francois Gay & Fils Chorey-les-Beaune Rouge 2018
Winemaker: Pascal Gay
Grapes: Pinot Noir
Domaine Gay Père et Fils was a family domaine in Burgundy for multiple generations, and in 1992 the land was split between brothers Michel and François. François started François Gay et Fils and his son Pascal took the helm in 2003. New to the shop is their Chorey-Lès-Beaune 2018.
Chorey-Lès-Beaune became an appellation in 1970 but for quite some time producers still found it easier to sell wine from this appellation labeled as the more recognizable Côte de Beaune-Villages. Times change, as they often do, and this appellation has come into its own (well deserved) reputation as producing excellent entry level Burgundy.
On immediate opening perfumed, bright red fruits leap from the glass. After a couple hours the wine develops into cherry fruit leather, bruised raspberries, dried thyme and memories of waking through the woods in the fall. A satisfying crunchy acidity carried by animalistic and spicy notes. A righteous finish with delicate, elongated tannins. A lively wine if you drink today but will age gracefully over the next several years. Pair with coq au vin or keep it simple with a hunk of crusty bread and charcuterie.-Orenda
