Domaine de la Chevalerie ‘Chevalerie’ Bourgueil Rouge 2014
Location: France, Loire, Bourgeuil
Winemaker: Laurie & Emmanuel Caslot
Grapes: Cabernet Franc
Soil: Tuffeau, alluvial sand, gravel
Winemaking: Maceration lasts less than 20 days, and aging is done in a mix of tank and large used barrels (with increasingly less oak because the siblings think too much oak masks clarity of flavor).
‘Chevalerie’: from the ‘Chevalerie’ vineyard, between the estate itself and the Galichets vineyard, higher on the slope. These vines are of mixed ages but the oldest ones are 75 years old. A beautiful expression of the mixed terroir: textural richness from the sand, salty acidity from the tuffeau. Blueberry liqueur, bay leaf, stewed plums, concentrated and stony.
From us at M&L: The Caslot family traces their roots back to the 1640s, and today thirteenth generation winegrowers Emmanuel and Laurie Caslot tend to the 33 organically/biodynamically farmed hectares around the village of Restigné and the hills of Benais. All the fruit is hand-harvested with careful sorting and destemming, short maceration time, and sulfur kept to a gentle minimum to avoid over-volatile acidity. ‘Peu Muleau’ is the first of their line of wines called ‘Cuvée Parcellaires’, which features different geological expressions of Cabernet Franc, the signature grape of Bourgueil.
