Stolpman Vineyards, So Fresh ‘Crunchy Rôastie’ Red 2022
Location: United States, California
Winemaker: Kyle Knapp & Matt Nocas
Grapes: 95% Syrah, 5% Viognier
Winemaking: early-harvested Syrah berries are left whole for carbonic fermentation, co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier (à la the old methods of making Côte Rôtie)
From the Producers: Since beginning production of ‘Crunchy Roastie’ in 2019, each year we bottle two distinct cuvees. We bottle the first edition with a black and white label in early January for an especially bright, fruit-forward, zippy profile. The second bottling, 3 months later in early April, fleshes out with the “extended elevage” (barrel age) and becomes more of a traditional red wine. The June 1st release of the rainbow label happens to coincide with Pride Month, and Stolpman Vineyards donates $3/bottle sold throughout June to our local Santa Ynez Valley Pride Foundation.
For the 2021 vintage of ‘Crunchy Rôastie’, expect lavender on the nose and exceedingly smooth and feathery on the palate with red and purple berry fruit. Polished, soft, and fine. Fresh, yet approachable and inviting. The rainbow edition benefits from only a slight chill, best popped at cellar temperature (55F) and allowed to gradually warm up as the bottle (quickly) depletes.
Over 20 years ago, our Founding Partner, Tom Stolpman, discovered what we believe to be one of the greatest viticultural sites on earth. Hidden in the hills of California’s Central Coast, on a rare Limestone outcropping & unobstructed from the Pacific Ocean wind, this unique land is naturally suited to grow Syrah and Roussanne grapes. We are committed to preserving this natural environment for our vines through conscious farming, dry farming, & sustainable employment. In the winery, we prefer native fermentation & minimal manipulation.
Dedicated to sensible farming & winemaking, we believe that we can create vibrant, site-specific wines, with a focus unique to Ballard Canyon AVA, California.
While Santa Barbara County was one of the few California wine regions to escape wildfires and smoke-taint in 2020, the devastating fires still greatly affected the wine industry here. Northern California winemakers rushed to famous vintner Ruben Solorzano looking for available fruit, willing to pay any price. Because of this, the 2020 Crunchy Rôastie wound up being from a much smaller lot than normal, made from fruit from one our favorite sources for carbonic Syrah, my friend Matt’s vineyard in Los Olivos District AVA. With all other fruit sources now spoken for, we decided to make the Crunchy Rôastie Rainbow from our own estate in Ballard Canyon. The fruit intensity of our dry-farmed vines over limestone shows through this wine and it will most likely be the only vintage of the cuvée ever to be produced from entirely estate fruit.
Walloping red fruit married with olives and smoke with a medium body and fine tannin. The wine fleshes out with 30 minutes of air or a quick decant and it will certainly develop with age. A perfect bridge between our So Fresh carbonic wines and our more serious, richer, classic wines. 2020 Crunchy Rôastie Rainbow will make us a lot of friends gather around the grill!
