Location: France, Roussillon, Maury

Winemaker: Marjorie & Stéphane Gallet

Grapes: Grenache Noir

Soil: limestone-schist

‘Fagayra’ Maury Rouge: Marjorie and Stéphane’s sweet red wine from vines planted in 1949, lying on a dome-shaped hill at the foot of the cliffs, just below the Quéribus. Glistening, dewy dark chocolate and blackcurrant liqueur; lacquered smoke and beautifully sanded tannins. Any chocolate-based dessert with this would be wonderful; but it would also drink stunningly with duck or lamb.

From the Importer D.B. Wine Selection: In 2001, Marjorie Gallet was cultivating 10 hectares of old vines, and she had an idea for her winery: Roc des Anges. A Carignan vine planted on a vein of quarts is behind the origin of the name; white soil surrounded by black schist, which the Llieu-dit took its name from. It is called ‘Roc Blanc’, which translates to ‘White Rock’… Angels were chosen to symbolize this vein of quartz and Roc Blanc became ‘Roc des Anges’.

From 2002 to 2007 with the purchase of a few parcels and new plantings the vineyard has grown to 25 hectares. In 2008 Stéphane joined Marjorie to manage the estate. They moved the winery from Tautavel to Montner in 2009. The Roc des Anges vineyard is located on the terroir of Montner, a small village of north Catalogne, nestles against the north hillside of the Forca Real mountain. They work the land from a terroir-driven perspective, respecting its nature and seeking its most sincere expression. They increase every year the production of organically grown grapes.
