From the Importer Vineyard Road: Hugues Godmé is at the cutting edge of the “new Champagne,” practicing biodynamics, wild yeast fermentations, and aging in old wood, with no filtration and low dosages. His commitment to biodynamics is so profound that it split the Godmé family in two more than a decade ago, and there are now two distinct Champagnes bearing the family name.
From his 7.5 hectares of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims, Hugues crafts fewer than 4,000 cases annually across a brilliant range of bottlings. While he might deny that he makes his wines to a “house style,” Hugues’ Champagnes are complex, layered wines reflective of the quietly serious man behind them. Daughter Lucile has joined her father at the estate after completing enology school in 2021.
