Location: France, Alsace

Winemaker: Etienne Simonis

Grapes: Riesling

Soil: myriad alluvial and colluvial sediment

Winemaking: He has worked organically and biodynamically since the early 2000s and received his certification in 2008.

From the Importer Jeffery Alpert: The Simonis family has long, rich history of winemaking in Ammerschwihr that dates all the way back to the 17th century. All of their production was sold off to local négociants until Joseph Simonis decided to shift courses and bottle and sell his wine personally. Joseph’s son René wanted to take over the domaine and built a cellar in 1974 where the estate is currently located. Directly after studying in Beaune and discovering biodynamics, Etienne Simonis took over the domaine in 1996 when he was only twenty years old. Etienne has slowly added to his domaine’s holdings, which he has expanded from 2.5ha to 7ha. Mostly located in Ammerschwihr, he also has plots in Bennwhir, Kaysersberg, Sisgolsheim, as well as vines on both the Kaefferkopf and Marckrain grand cru sites.
