Matthieu & Renaud Mabillot Reuilly Blanc 2023
Location: France, Loire, Reuilly
Winemaker: Matthieu and Renaud Mabillot
Grapes: Sauvignon Blanc
Matthieu and Renaud Mabillot work about 8hectares in Reuilly and are at the center of the region’s revival. The relatively warm climate (as compared to the Loire Atlantic or Touraine), silica-sandy top soil and Kimmeridgian bedrock provide favorable conditions for opulent, fruited, mineral Sauvignon. The brothers also allow ferments to run their course naturally and age the wines on the fine lees for several months. They practice their finessed style of winemaking in the community chai, which they had a hand in building.
Alive with aromas of ginger and molasses cookies, ripe honeydew, and wet stone. It drinks fresh like a roll in an orchard meadow: white flowers, grass and perfectly ripe fruit. Terrific aperitif or for the picnic crudités.
From the Importer Jeffrey Alpert Selections: Alain Mabillot proudly handed over this small family domaine he founded in 1989 to his two sons, Matthieu and Renaud. The brothers work quite differently than most of their neighbors in this part of the Loire: they are one of few domaines to plough soils and reduce yields, strengthening concentration. Their vines are situated atop a special Kimmeridgian limestone which connects this part of the Loire with Chablis in Burgundy. While not yet organically certified, Domaine Mabillot nevertheless practices a number of organic and biodynamic treatments and processes, such as the inclusion of nettle and horsetail to strengthen plant life and fight disease. The Mabillot family also has a history of producing cereal, which the young brothers continue to produce even to this day. The 1950s saw Alain’s parents actually uproot their family vines for cereal production due to the lack of sales. Some years later, Matthieu and Renaud have clearly raised the standard and are committed to producing light, fruit-driven wines that reflect their terroir and don’t include the excesses sulfur usage seen so often in the eastern Loire and Sancerre.
