Altra Via ‘Puhaniz’ Rosso 2022
Location: Italy, Umbria
Winemaker: Paolo Manso
Grapes: Sangiovese
Winemaking: Puhaniz comes from a young parcel of Sangiovese, about 9 years old. Two thirds of the grapes were de-stemmed and crushed and a third was whole bunch macerated with punchdowns for the duration of the spontaneous alcoholic fermentation, which was 20 days. The grapes were basket pressed, aged in stainless steel without temperature control and bottled by gravity without fining or filtration.(1400 bottles produced)
From the Importer SelectioNaturel: Altra Via is a new project from the passionate Paolo Manso, who was a former wine director/buyer at La Mescita and other hotspots in Rome. He made his first vintage from vines in the hamlet of Castelbuono (Bevagna) in the province of Perugia. The vineyard is called Vigna Pianate San Sisto and sits about 500 meters above sea level in the north-east exposed hills on clay, limestone and sandstone soils.
He is farming organically with the use of only a little copper and sulfur to preserve the integrity of this special site. In 2022 he started working with a parcel called Cerreto Alto with 50 year old Trebbiano vines.
He is good friends with Giampiero and Marisa from Dune Bianche and they spend a lot of time helping out in each others' cellars, and enjoying the fruits of one another’s labors.
