Grapes: Chenin Blanc
From the importer D.B. Wine: On the plateau overlooking the Loire, the Château de Villeneuve offers stunning views of the river wild. Magnificent eighteenth century mansion, it is built in stone which the nobility of the terroir of the region: the tufa.
1969 the Family Chevallier became the owner of the castle which was entirely restored and acquired its present look. In 1997, after extensive renovation and modernizing work, the Château de Villeneuve returns to its original cellars giving back to the property all of its original charm.
The 25 hectares surrounding the property of the family Chevallier give complex wines marked by a great personality.
The work of the vineyard is done in a reasoned: grass growing between the rows with Kentucky blue grass to maximize rooting and water supply to the vine, preservation of natural enemies (typhlodrome, thrips…) to promote integrated pest management and to limit the use of pesticides.
The Saumur Blanc is 100% Chenin Blanc, hand-harvested from 25-year-old vines planted to limestone and clay. Slow fementation in 600L tonneaux, and a little élevage in wood. Malolactic fermentation in wooden casks, 30% of the cuvée. It is assembled in cuve before bottling. A lovely fresh and open fruit on the nose, clean, mineral, and very expressive. It has an impressive life on the palate, showing no overt residual sugar and plenty of strident acidity with a supple character. Very dry and structured.
