Cantina La Bacheta ‘Isa’ Verona Rosso 2022
Location: Italy, Veneto, Corvina
Winemaker: Giorgia Quintarelli
Grapes: Corvina
Winemaking: Organic farming, hand harvest. Semi-carbonic maceration. Pied de cuve and crush. Harvest 9.24.2022. Bottled in Feb 2023. 2028 btls prod.
From the Importer Selection Massale: Giorgia Quintarelli is a 25 year old winemaker who, along with her partner Simone and Lessinia Shepherd dog Gnocchi, is Cantina La Bacheta. Previous to setting up shop in Custoza, Giorgia worked in Chateauneuf du Pape. She now has four hectares total, spread over three separate plots on her family's property near the Via Gorgo (which means water from the soil or “gurgle”--there are springs under the hills and vineyards). The vines behind the house are Corvina and Rondinella planted on mostly clay. Higher altitude plots are mostly white varieties including Garganega. Giorgia saves the Garganega and Pinot Blanc, on one last row of the higher plots, for her grandpa Giuseppe to work (keeps him busy). The other plot is 1.5 ha of Cortese and Trebbianelle (a relative of Tocai Fruilani), also Tocai, planted across the valley from their house.
Everything has been organic certified since 2012. The only treatments in the vines are copper and sulfur spray for mildew. There’s a new vineyard, a one hectare rental plot which is AOP Custoza and half a mile up the slope from their property with unknown varieties, but mostly Garganega and some red varieties. They need analysis to prove the genetics. The vines are forty years old at least. Currently in conversion to Bio, which takes three years.
