Marc Delienne ‘Le Petit Nat’ Pétillant Rosé NV
Location: France, Beaujolais
Winemaker: Marc Delienne
Grapes: Gamay
Soil: Sandy, sandy loam stemmed from granite
Winemaking: His domaine was certified organic in 2018. Demeter certification followed in 2020. Marc grapes all of his grapes by hand, never capitalizes, and eschews the use of all herbicides and pesticides in the vines. SO2 levels are kept to a bare minimum.
After sorting, grapes are left whole-cluster and moved to concrete vats. After a quick, temperature-controlled fermentation (12 days only) using native yeasts only, the wine is then moved to age in 30hl foudres for 18 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Tiny dose of SO2 at bottling.
From us at M&L: ‘Le Petit Nat’ is a pale pink in the glass with delicate aromas of pink apple, bosc pear, marzipan and dried apricot; fresh pink flowers and citruses on the palate, impressively lightweight and delicate. Drink with a variety of light, fresh cheeses.
From the Producer: Marc Delienne bought a property in Fleurie in January 2015 to create his new business there. A quickly built vat, the conversion to organic is immediately started in order to acquire organic certification as soon as possible.
On soils that are mainly sandy or loamy-sandy from primary rocks (granites) or old alluvial deposits, with sometimes very stony cover and shallow to medium depth, the vines, aged 40 to over 80 years, are planted at the density of 11,000 vines/ha. The traditional goblet pruning is respected here although the vine is managed in such a way as to significantly increase the height of the vegetation. Regular, shallow tillage, special care given to seasonal vegetation and the practice of biodynamics are essential characteristics of cultivation at the estate.
The vinifications are carried out gently and as naturally as possible. It is with the whole harvest, after rigorous sorting, that the concrete vats are filled, without adding yeast or chaptalisation. Daily pumping over is not supported for extractions without excess. The fermentations are short, the wines buried, for the most part, as soon as the pressings have been carried out.
From the Importer Jeffrey Alpert Selections: Marc Delienne might well agree with the adage that it’s never too late to follow your heart. At 56 years old, Marc Delienne decided that enough was enough: he would leave his career working in the banking and IT sectors in Paris and finally try to live his dream to spend his time in the vineyard. He began working in the vines as well as the cellar at Domaine de Trévallon. Two years later he worked under Alain Graillot at Domaine de Fa, wherein he was involved with all aspects of the winemaking. Marc finally made the leap the following year and purchased Château de l’Abbaye Saint Laurent d’Arpayé right in the middle of Fleurie. Marc currently farms 13ha hectares Fleurie, 0.75ha in Beaujolais-Village, and 0.25ha in Beaujolais. His vines range from 40 to 80 years of age. Marc began practicing organic and biodynamic practices as soon as he took over the vines.
